As a key player not only in Leeds’s ever-evolving music scene but in modern-day hard rock, Wolforna are a four-piece on an impressive trajectory. They formed in 2019 as an acoustic trio originally consisting of Jack Crabtree (Vocals, Guitar), Adam Whittaker (Lead Guitar), Alex Waite (Bass) before Theo Fieldhouse (Drums) joined in 2021, this saw the band progress into the outfit they are today.
After a number of impressive releases including 'Penrose' (over 10,000 Spotify plays) and their last release ‘Break You’ surpassing the 18,000-stream mark, along with a packed 2022 schedule of headliners and supporting slots for rising bands such as THE HARA, False Heads and BlackWaters, Wolforna are back with a new single ‘22 Degrees & Sunny’.
Their signature sound combines classic rhythm guitar sensibilities and melodic harmonies but now as with Break You the band are firmly setting their sights in upping the ante and taking a step in a heavier direction.
Upping the ante
Its easy these days for bands to fall into the usual ‘indie’ mould yet Wolforna have cast off these shackles bringing a fresh sound delivered in a ‘Deftones’ style yet it sticks within their ethos, the melodies and rhythms are still there…perhaps even more so.
A soundscape that is fiery
It’s a hard-hitting track, pure rock, with a soundscape that is fiery. The lyrics are powerful with dark undertones, feelings creeping under the skin further cement the sentiment. Delivered in a style that’s almost murmured/whispered yet its not hushed, it has power and energy and packs a huge punch.
Raucous, blistering drums
It has to, the instrumental is laden with raucous, blistering drums that pummel the eardrums and set the scene for chugging, gritty riffs that hit you squarely in the chest with a thump. The solo takes the track in slightly different direction, arabesque in nature (Imagine Debussy with a guitar and amp) giving a uniqueness but not deflecting from the nature of the track. As the title suggests 22 degrees…its hot, fierce and likely to leave a searing brand mark on the ears. It sticks with you and that is the mark of a great song.
Chugging, gritty riffs that hit you squarely in the chest
22 Degrees & Sunny is a fast-paced energetic track that has a swaggering punch that leaves you breathless, yes it may come across as been on the darker side and some will interpret it that way, the delivery however, is bright, the rhythm gives an added flourish that shines, melodies are there in abundance, it’s a track that needs to be blasted out into the summer sky. This is sure to be a giggers favourite…if you can stand the heat!
