Out of Time - Diving Horse

By Daffs aka @TwoDaff

Diving Horse are Gavin Marshall (Vocals/Keys), Ciaran McGuigan (Vocals) Mark Scrymgeour (Guitar), Chris Kerr (Keys), Louise Neilson (Bass) and Chris Struzik (Drums). All members of the band have honed their abilities in other bands including Static Future, The Telephone Exchange, We See Lights and Butler’s Experiment – as well as their solo projects.

Formed just over a year ago, they have been writing and developing music with the intention of releasing 4 singles in quick succession, After the release of the first - ‘Big Sands’ (REVIEW HERE) They are back with the release of the 2nd ‘Out of Time’ released on 30th June. This follows a gig at the McChuills in Glasgow on the 29th. They are set to play at Stereo on August 11th (amongst others)– a 3 singles are out gig. The band love playing live and are always open to more gigs…promoters/venues take note. In the meantime, the band are busy writing and recording more tracks.

The emphasis is on melodies and more melodies

Diving Horse have a trademark sound, the emphasis is on melodies and more melodies. Their last track was my first introduction to the band, so I was eagerly awaiting the next one. They have a unique sound, fully accomplished in what they do, their previous experience shines through and is noticeable. They know what they are doing. A refreshing sound that gives you a lift…no morose, moody sounds often associated with the indie genre. The ethos and sentiment is there however, but it’s a clever fusion of a number of genres, a pop soundscape with elements of new wave/alt rock and a hint of electronica.

Out of time opens with an atmospheric percussive beat with a chiming synth and deep bass line before a rush of sound brings in the rest of the bend to create a rich, melodic backdrop for the silky-smooth vocal. This track has many layers, its lush basslines and catchy drum patterns create a platform for soaring riffs to shine. Again, the emphasis is on melody…and it delivers.

A rich, melodic backdrop for the silky-smooth vocal

Its full of chiming little synth runs that intertwine with soaring guitar riffs adding vibrancy that shines, and there’s more…as the track builds harmonies in the chorus add a sheen to the crisp lead vocal. Its upbeat, catchy and as with the last track had me humming all day. The track builds in sound as it progresses, becoming richer and resonating, harmonies and backing vocals are fantastic creating a massive finish.

Harmonies in the chorus add a sheen

It’s a great sound and as a 2nd single its impressive. Every band member is on point, it’s a melodic dream, the talent this band have is not to be underestimated. I am already looking forward to their third track…it can’t come soon enough for me.
