One of the great things about writing reviews is that you are party to new bands and new music. Its an exciting element which makes it worthwhile. So, I was pleased when Diving Horse got in touch with a request to review their debut single ‘Big Sands’ released on 26th May.
Diving Horse are Gavin Marshall (Vocals/Keys), Ciaran McGuigan (Vocals) Mark Scrymgeour (Guitar), Chris Kerr (Keys), Louise Neilson (Bass) and Chris Struzik (Drums). All members of the band have honed their abilities in other bands including Static Future, The Telephone Exchange, We See Lights and Butler’s Experiment – as well as their solo projects.
Formed just over a year ago, they have been writing and developing music and Big Sands is the first of 3 singles they are set to self-release. They have a number of gigs coming up notably at McChuills in Glasgow on the 29th June and a 3-singles-are-now-out gig at Stereo on August 11th. The band love playing live and are always open to more gigs…promoters/venues take note. In the meantime, the band are busy writing and recording more tracks.
Deep bassline, like a heartbeat, pulsing rhythmically
Big Sands opens with gentle keys, with a deep bassline, like a heartbeat, pulsing rhythmically in the background. It creates an air of anticipation before the rest of the band come in, a glistening lead riff takes control alongside a marvellous backing vocal that soars. The lead vocal is honeyed, silky smooth, rich in texture and blends with harmonious backing.
Soaring backing vocals add atmosphere
The track is upbeat and very catchy, the melodies hook you and remain, I have been humming this for days, it has that effect. Their sound is rich and full. A clear indication that they know what they are doing. It’s a refreshing change from guitar heavy indie rock, its pop with a true indie ethos. A sort of alternative rock/pop/new wave sound, energetic and well fun. I find it uplifting. The soaring backing vocals add atmosphere and give an almost dreamlike vibe.
Pop with a true indie ethos
Big Sands is full of melodies, whether it be the keys, chiming guitars, the vocals and the bass line, each element is accomplished, backed with a steady drum pattern that has the head nodding and the feet tapping in approval. It’s a rich tapestry of sound, and a delight to listen to. As a debut single its strong, a big sound, a delicate balance of a number of genres, carefully crafted into a song that will appeal to many. Impressive.
A rich tapestry of sound
Diving Horse are a band that look set to make people sit up and take notice, they have a full sound that spans the genres, gleaning from their own experiences with previous bands, they have come together as a formidable unit, working together in symbiosis, blending their individual talents to create a great sound. I thoroughly recommend giving these guys a listen, you won’t be disappointed.
