Copenhagen - Redeemers

By Daffs aka @TwoDaff

Redeemers are a five-piece indie-rock band, the quintet are Fronted by the charismatic Matty McCallum, who is joined by lead guitarist Eoin Harkin, drummer Jake Conroy, rhythm guitarist Matthew Spooner and bass player Reece Douthwaite. Redeemers have been performing live since July 2021 and are set for a big year ahead with the release of now music and gigs up and down the country coming up.

The lit the fuse last year with the riotous ‘Venue Affair’ a blistering, raucous track that went down a storm. Now they are back in true Redeemers fashion with their 2nd studio single ‘Copenhagen’. This track has been circulating on Youtube as an acoustic version for over a year now and now this full version release is set get those ears pricked up in the music world.

Eoin Harkin says:

The song isn’t actually all about Copenhagen. It’s about a trip I took to Scandinavia when I was eighteen and each verse details a person I thought was memorable on the trip. The idea for the chorus was about finding a place and realising how much you’ve enjoyed your time there and not wanting to go back to normality...

‘Copenhagen’ is an established fan favourite at live shows and follows Venue Affair which was released to great acclaim and was played several times at FC Manchester’s home games.

A gentle dreamy riff overlays a hushed city soundscape

The intro leads you into a false sense of security, a gentle dreamy riff overlays a hushed city soundscape, a gentle breeze coerces you into a relaxed state, its atmospheric. The vocal here is gentle, tantalising drawing you in and taking you for a stroll along the cobbled streets. And then the deception ends…

Flamboyant vocal delivered by Matty in true Redeemers style

The thump of a drum wakes you from the slumber, driven rhythm guitars backed with blistering lead riffs change the tone and vibe completely. Its classic indie rock with the added flamboyant vocal delivered by Matty in true Redeemers style. The lead riffs and solo’s give the track added drive and swagger. It builds and builds to a beautiful crescendo of sound, rich and full of resonance

A beautiful crescendo of sound

It has a groove that’s addictive, the anthemic driven guitars add a huge depth of sound and allows the lead riffs/runs to glide effortlessly. The vocal is just brilliant, no frills, with honest lyrics that are relatable. Its easy to see why this is favourite at gigs. Its a commentary of observations, people watching at its best, packaged up into really great song.

The guitar solo is a static charged delight

Packed full of energy, it’s a great track. The guitar solo is a static charged delight, it blisters and crackles cutting through the heavy driven, grooving rhythm. A perfect match that leaves you wanting more. The drumming is fast paced, with fast paced fills cutting into the overall groove. The chorus "Copenhagen you've been so cruel to me" delivered with a touch of venom, but back with chiming lead riffs really hit the spot for me.

A blistering high energy journey

I like the way the intro really sets the track up, it adds a touch of anticipation, the change in pace, tone add a touch of angst and bags of swagger. It’s a blistering high energy journey, taking you to a place and not wanting to return. The delivery of the vocal and the soundscape highlight the sentiment within the track. This track will certainly make people sit up and take notice, I personally love it. I can’t wait to see what they have planned next.
