Break You - Wolforna
By Daffs aka @TwoDaff
As a key player not only in Leeds’ ever-evolving music scene but in modern-day hard rock, Wolforna are a four-piece on an impressive trajectory. They formed in 2019 as an acoustic trio originally consisting of Jack Crabtree (Vocals, Guitar), Adam Whittaker (Lead Guitar), Alex Waite (Bass) before Theo Fieldhouse (Drums) joined in 2021, this saw the band progress into the outfit they are today.
Their sound fuses classic rhythm guitar sensibilities with sharp lead undertones and crisp, melodic vocals, all seamlessly sewn together with pace setting bass and drums. While this pure, traditional style of rock ‘n’ roll is often tried on for size by artists, few pull it off in such a slick, well-rounded fashion as Wolforna.
Influenced by the likes of Pearl Jam, Biffy Clyro and Queens of the Stone Age, they have a captivating catalogue of music including tracks like ‘Broken Bones and Gritty Fights’, 'Writing on the Walls’ 'Penrose' (which amassed over 10,000 Spotify plays) and their recent release ‘Reset’.
It stands to reason that securing gigs and spots on small festival line-ups has been effortless for the band. They also played a whopping support slot for THE HARA at The Key Club, openers for BlackWaters and False Heads, and a headline show at Royal Park Cellars with Scruff of the Neck at the promoter’s helm. You can bank on Wolforna being a well-connected outfit on the rise, with a social media following to match.
Wolforna are now set to release their latest track ‘Break You’ which see’s the band change the pace and style from previous tracks, a fun upbeat punk tune with catchier hooks. A natural change in direction for the band. The track tells of push and pull of a toxic relationship, and the agonising reality that comes with not wanting to entirely cut yourself loose from it, despite it being bound for disaster. While it’s written from the perspective of one person, it harnesses the intentions of both people.
A romping, stomper of tune
Opening with raw, fast paced riff, the vocal kicks in ‘I know its late, I wanna break you’ and sets the scene for what is to become a romping, stomper of tune. Its punk 100%. Thunderous drums and a thumping bass enter the fray and the track takes off. The vocal is immense, vitriolic and powerful, edgy and honest.
Vitriolic and powerful, edgy and honest.
There’s a lot going on throughout the track, the chorus see’s the rest of the band jump in on the vocals giving depth and more energy. Its fast paced, highly energetic, the sort of track that will have gig goers bouncing off the ceiling. Backing vocals give a proper punk edge, filled with energy with a hint of aggression, yet its fun, the guitar hooks are catchy and thumping bass line gives it depth.
A machine gun riff battles it out with an artillery of drum beats
There’s a cool interlude at around 1min 40secs, where just the drums and guitar face off with each other (with a bit of chatter in the background), a machine gun riff battles it out with an artillery of drum beats leading to a slight change of pace and style, heavier rock than punk, however it’s a perfect blend that fuses seamlessly. Driven guitars really push the song on here, all the while you are hit with a barrage of drums. It then kicks off again, the guitars pick up pace, its brilliant.
A huge dirty soundscape
Driven by the guitar with a melodic backdrop we pick up the pace for a crescendo of a finale, riotous and loud. This track has a little bit of everything, great hooks, catchy riffs, powerful, venomous vocals, and a huge dirty soundscape, that mixes the punk with the rock giving a sound that packs a massive punch. Personally I am a big fan of big guitar tracks, I like a bit of punk having being brought up on a diet of the Pistols and Clash et al. This fits the bill. A great track this. Bravo.
