Call The Hive - Jonny Ash Band

@TwoDaff

By Daffs aka @TwoDaff

Jonny Ash Band are four lads from Wrexham, the band consists of Callum Gaughran – the enigmatic frontman and what a voice, his brother Dan Gaughran responsible for thunderous bass lines, Pete Roberts on Lead guitar and Mike Jones in charge of the pummelling drum beats that get you going. Need I say more…oh yes there is much more.

Formed in 2021, they have released a number of singles so far including ‘We Are The People’ ‘Boys With Black Eyes’ ‘Disco’, ‘Rosies’ and 'This Town' along with an EP ‘Did You Get Involved’ released earlier this year.

These tracks have earned them recognition and radio play throughout the UK, including BBC Wales, BBC 6, XS Manchester and Amazing Radio. Although they have only been around a short time they have worked alongside Shaun Ryder, The Sherlocks, This Feeling and Scruff of the Neck. Our sound music added them to their hotlist and they were awarded single of the week for ‘We are the people’.

A superb vocal, rasping and gritty

Now they are back with their latest release ‘Call The Hive’ released on the 17th June. It opens with a funk/rock riff that is instantly addictive pulling you into the track. A deep resonating bass hits you and were off. Once again, a superb vocal, rasping and gritty takes us on the flight of the bumblebee. Its brilliant lyrically with the chorus lines ‘Why did the bee never tell the fly the honey tastes better than the shit outside’. for example.

Edgy guitars packed full of rhythm and melodies

It has Stone Roses/‘Begging You’ kind of feel, edgy guitars packed full of rhythm and melodies. It instantly hooks you with its energy. Fast paced riffs fizz and sparkle, pummelling drums add effervescence driving the track.

Pummelling drums add effervescence

The vocal has an underlying swagger delivered with just a bit of edge, pure indie rock. There is an atmospheric spoken vocal towards the end that adds an air of tension, anticipation before building to a crescendo at the end, it ends to soon for me, i always want more, this track should have an extended version, the instrumental could keep going as in I am the Resurrection. It’s a perfect track for this in my opinion…a full 9 minutes will do lads I’m not greedy.

A real swaggering indie vibe

Jonny Ash don’t mess about, I fell in love with Rosie’s, but this takes it up a notch, grooving melodies, great lyrics along with scintillating guitars create a sound that is made for the summer. This will have gigs bouncing. Packed full of riffs and lead lines underlying the vocal give it a real swaggering indie vibe, you hear something different every time. To sum it up it’s a classic indie banger with a hint of funk and shed load of attitude. Buzzing!
