Hailing from Guiseley Leeds, BACKSPACE have been playing and performing throughout high school. Now at the age of 18 and with drummer Harry Turner having left for Uni and brother Alex taking on the role of beat master they are joined by Izzy Turner (no relation) on rhythm guitar alongside Rosie Weston (vocals) Harry Adams (Lead Guitar) and Miles Addie (Bass) to produce a formidable line-up, playing across Leeds and the Yorkshire region. With more studio time planned, 2023 looks bright for BACKSPACE who are already forging a strong reputation on the local live scene.
Following the release of their singles 'Hold' and 'Lottery of Life' which achieved airplay on BBC Introducing York & North Yorkshire, John Kennedy’s new music show on Radio X and Charlie Ashcroft’s Audition show on Amazing Radio, BACKSPACE are back with their next instalment 'Come Round' released on all platforms on Thursday 13th April 2023. Aided once again by the masterful production of Gus Turner at Gafro Studios the track was written during Covid and deals with issues of isolation.
Rosie says of the single
“We wrote Come Round at the height of Lockdown as a reaction to missing our friends”
A chunky bass riff opens the track
An instant hit of a chunky bass riff opens the track before a palm muted guitar embellishes it, the addition of a catchy drum beat completes the vibe, its bouncy, catchy and pacey. This sets the scene for Rosie Weston's vocal to play out, its mellow yet succinct with an underlying emotion that was only too evident at the time of writing, (remember Covid) its relevant and captures the mood of that time. A time when we needed each other the most. When we were all missing someone to a certain extent
Full of melodic bass lines and carefully crafted riffs
The track is packed full of melodic bass lines and carefully crafted riffs that bounce off each other whilst the drums add fills and keep the whole thing bubbling along nicely creating an air of urgency which is soothed by the velvet tones in the vocal. When put together as a whole the significance in the lyrics come to the fore.
Soothed by the velvet tones in the vocal
It’s a clever and intriguing track, it feels upbeat, it sounds accomplished, as a relatively young band they definitely show great maturity in both their musicianship and song writing. There is a definable complexity in the instrumental, multi layered with flashes of colour from the clean crisp guitars whilst the bass drives a melodic platform for the rest of the band to literally bounce off.
Multi layered with flashes of colour
Its an infectious grove, it keeps you interested and the melodies stick. I really like the sound; I get hints of a young Chrissie Hynde in the vocal (just a hint) and its delivered-on point. The whole band are tight and are to be applauded for creating a clever, accomplished track. It is addictive and I for one am already looking out their other tracks. I like this a lot.
