New band on the scene The Pottingers are a Belfast based indie/alt rock outfit named after the historic ‘Pottinger’s Entry’ connecting Ann Street to High Street in their Home town. The name was chosen when a passer-by in this same alley asked a then busking quartet if they had a name. This proved to be the turning point that created the band known today.
After a hiatus and line-up change, the band has now burst back into the scene with their signature high energy performances and catchy hooks. They consist of Peter Keogh (Bass), Matt Hedley (Drums), Jonny Bill (Lead Guitar) and Niall Thomas Curtis (Vocals and Rhythm guitar). They have recently released their fan favourite single ‘Flashback’ to all major streaming platforms.
Now I have to admit, I hadn’t really heard of this band but thanks to the magic of Twitter and Paula the band got in touch with their debut release. This is what I like about the music scene at the moment, so many bands to explore, and like minded people sharing, if it wasn’t for platforms such as Twitter then most would go unnoticed, there’s no point in relying on commercial media…anyway rant over, back to what matters…the music.
A strong statement of intent
Flashback has had over 1000 plays already and it is easy to see why. As far as debuts go it’s a strong statement of intent. Its high energy yet its not an ‘In yer face’ kind of track. There’s a deep resonance emanating from the bass line and upbeat rolling drums.
Distinctive and powerful vocals
The lead riffs shimmer and glisten, intertwined with the catchy rhythms. This creates a melodic backdrop for the distinctive and powerful vocals that punch through the mix. It blends perfectly. Complete with backing vocals it’s a great sound. Its rich in sound, multi-layered jangly guitars add texture and feeling.
A definitive swagger
The lead solo soars, its not blistering yet it has a definitive swagger as it rises leaving the track open for the vocal to shine further. Its smooth and crisp as a gentle drum pattern builds in the background taking us to the end of the track.
A strong debut
You can see this band know what they are doing, oozing in confidence, they are tight, from the drums to the vocal, everything is delivered on point. This is a strong debut single and I thoroughly recommend you give them a listen and a follow. The Pottingers are definitely ones to watch this year. Hopefully their next release won’t be long in coming.
