I have been a big fan of Fat Dads since their inception and the release of ‘Trust and Promises’ back In 2022. They hail from Carlisle, the Wirral and Kirkcudbright. Influenced by The Strokes, Sports Team and RATS they have a sound harking back to the garage/indie scene of the noughties, with their catchy indie infused tunes. Fat Dads are Tyee Wright (Vocals), Steven Dixon (Guitar), Mike Smith (Guitar), Alex Whittaker (Bass) and Andy Graham (Drums).
Their debut release was followed by ‘Taking our Sweet time’ and since then the band have steadily built up their fan base through social media. Both tracks have featured on numerous playlists and gained airplay on Radio1 and Radio X with John Kennedy in particular.
Their third track ‘Filthy animal’ was released on 4th November, and yet again brought with it the Fat Dads attitude, honesty, fun, and that DIY sensibility all combined to give you great music. These tracks defined the summer, fun lyrics, singalong choruses fused with catchy melodies and a touch of humour.
On January 13, they released their 1st EP ‘Clout Chasers' which included all of the above plus their last single ‘We can work it out’. (Review on this site) And yet again they surpassed all that has gone before, with each release raising the bar.
Now they are set to release their latest offering ‘Girlfriend’ due for release in all the usual places on 6th April 2023. Once again, the lads have bulldozed their previous tracks with this one, a slight change in sound and vibe yet it’s in keeping with their ethos. It has all the honesty and fun yet it has bags more attitude.
Fat Dads jangly riff
Opening with a typical Fat Dads jangly riff that is instantly catchy before the distortion gets turned up a notch to give an edgy backing rhythm overlaid with that catchy riff. It’s a song about a best mates girlfriend who you dislike and dislikes you and how your mate has changed because of her and that you want to say what your mate is too scared to say…That’s my thought anyway. I listened to the explicit version and they say it much better…
A touch of angst
The vocal as always is on the money, blending marvellously with the instrumental only this time its delivered with just a hint of sarcasm and a touch of angst. The lyrics are honest with plenty of attitude. Throughout the verse there a numerous melodies and hooks that give it an upbeat feel. The bass line throughout the verse is backed with a thumping drum, this is catchy as hell and allows the guitars to fill in the gaps, impeccably timed.
A real earworm of a chorus.
All this builds to a massive chorus that is guaranteed to be a winner with a live crowd, The chorus really has attitude, guitars drive it forward setting the vocal up to deliver the coup de Gras “I f***in hate your Girlfriend” From here on in it’s a sing(shout) a long song, A massive live track, made for a crowd, anthemic and loud. Its a real earworm of a chorus.
Anthemic and loud
Overall Fat Dads have come out with a track that above all is fun yet something most of us can relate to. Its by far their best track to date, it still has the Fat Dads sound but this has more edge, more punch with a backing instrumental that is a touch heavier. It gives the track more gravitas and elevates the sentiment within the lyrics. They are now coming into their own with the unique sounds/tracks they are releasing, having followed them since the get go I have seen them develop this sound and it just gets better and better. Hopefully they will continue in the same vain because I can see 2023 being a big year for the lads. More of the same please!
