History - Apollo Junction

@TwoDaff

By Daffs aka @TwoDaff

Leeds outfit, Apollo Junction are an alternative rock band and can be described as a modern-day brit pop outfit. Consisting of Jamie Williamson (Vocals), Matt Wilson (Guitar), Ben Hope (Bass), Jonathan Thornton (Drums) and Sam Potter (Keys) they have built up a large following playing to fans across the country with their unique brand of music without conforming to the norm, creating a movement of real music loving fans from all backgrounds. Their music is relatable and shows the power of live bands today.

Apollo Junction have also been busy in the gig circuit with a string of sold out shows and festivals across the country including support slots for The Kaiser Chiefs and Pigeon Detectives and their biggest headline slots to date at Leeds Warehouse.

The band have recently announced and sold out a series of stripped back dates across Yorkshire. The aim being to return to some of the venues that they played in the early days of the band (before the debut album) and failed to sell many (or any) tickets. The band were delighted to see the response from the fanbase and sold out all dates within 2 hours.

After a string of successful single releases such as 'Forever', 'Sometimes', and 'Borderlines' more recently 'By the River' (Review Here) they have also released two albums ‘Mystery’ and ‘All In’. Now they are set to release their latest track ‘History’ on April 6th.

After the success of By the River. the track peaked at number 8 in the digital singles charts (and this was during the heights of the Brits week). History is the next instalment and marks a significant step change in direction and highlights a side of the band not heard before.

Gentle and emotive

Opening with a beautifully strummed acoustic guitar, giving a ballad like feel before the thump of the drums and an atmospheric synth raises the level whilst keeping the tender almost soothing feel to the track. The vocal comes in and I have to so its beautiful, its gentle and emotive and just soars above the backdrop of dripping synths and crisp acoustic chords.

Dripping synths and crisp acoustic chords.

The lyrics are 100% relatable and powerful, hinting at the feelings of exposure and being vulnerable and how anxiety can leave you on your own, yet at the same time together it will be okay…the line “In these moments I don’t know why, Yeah you and me are gonna touch the sky” In this day and age where we all have suffered to some extent its really does strike a chord. It’s from the heart.

Sentiment and emotion oozing out from every note

The track builds to an anthemic chorus, rich and velvety, almost warming. Its one of those songs that you feel rather than just hear. It does leave that lump in throat, its that powerful, you can feel the sentiment and emotion oozing out from every note, every chord, every strum.

And then the song explodes into a magnificent instrumental break, soaring higher, its full of colour, multi-layered, the synths and strings add a certain richness to the texture, it makes the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. I can’t emphasise or put into words the power in this track.

A band for the People

Some people say changing direction is a gamble…well it has paid off here, this track drips in pure gold, its got a depth that just never ends, full of melodies in the instrumental but the vocal adds tenderness, highly emotive and accomplished. It highlights a different side to the band and fans are sure to get on this. If this song is a song for the people then Apollo Junction are definitely A band for the People.
