So, I have been sitting on this track since February when I was sent a very early version, it wasn’t mastered or mixed, just Gazelle doing what they do best. I said at the time it could be released as it is, it was that good. Over the months I have seen this track evolve and develop into what I believe is going to be one of the tracks of the year. That said, it is Gazelle after all and having since heard a few more demo’s…just an acoustic and Ryan’s magnificent vocal I can assure you that Gazelle are on it.
For those of you who are unaware of the lads from Leicester, the band consists of Ryan Dunn (Vocals/Guitar), Ben Gooch (Guitar), Richard Sorbi (Bass) and Danny Wright (Drums). They bring a variety of sounds and styles in everything they produce. Having previously reviewed a number of their releases I am always amazed at their accomplished skill in what they produce.
Intense melodies, great lyricism and sublime vocals
They are truly unique, From the Northern Soul sound of ‘Magic Carpet Ride’ to the indie infused ‘Clementine’ and not forgetting the emotive, powerful and passionate ‘Violet Hour Blues’ they are a band that often falls under the radar, God knows why, hard to believe that they haven’t been snapped up. Intense melodies, great lyricism and sublime vocals feature heavily in all they do. They are not happy going with flow, taking risks and mixing up their sound, impossible to pigeon hole yet they are confident, they know what they want to achieve and do it with ease.
So, what’s it all about? They are set to release their latest track, ‘Lady Blue Sky’ for download 16th June with an accompanying video out on the 11th. This track sums the band up in a nutshell. A heady mix of influences, packaged up into a vibrant refreshing sound.
A blend of 60’s psychedelia fused with an indie swagger and vibe
Opening with a Beatle-esque spoken intro, a summery vibe…”The sun is out…the sky is blue... Its beautiful...Wont you come out to play”. And then the drum hits you backed with a funky guitar riff and bass line. It’s a catchy rhythm that sticks in your head. Harmonious Aaaahs intertwine with the rhythm setting a template for the main vocal to kick in…and kick it certainly does. “Electric baby dressed in white. Can’t stop the feeling. Plagues my mind” This is just a scene setter, the track takes on a groove from here on in, a blend of 60’s psychedelia fused with an indie swagger and vibe that to me smacks of the Stone roses from the 2nd coming era.
It’s a track that has everything
Packed full of harmony’s, great backing vocals accentuate Ryan's vocal which is on the money as always, great range and hard hitting. The guitar riffs are electric, a gift that keeps on giving, driving the track. The drum beat adds a real groove to a melodic bass line. It is multi layered, so much going on yet it works perfectly, it’s a track that has everything in my opinion. The chorus is addictive as hell and is a real sing along. Perfect for the summer. Its bright and energetic and has a vibrancy that is uplifting.
An acoustic strummed interlude that rolls
The track takes a subtle change at around two and half minutes, with an acoustic strummed interlude that rolls, backed with a deep resonating bass it allows the vocal to shine further. As it builds, harmonious backing vocals add more colour and intensity taking us to the end.
Their best track to date
This track for me is immense, it has everything I like in music, it has elements of legendary bands such as the Beatles, Stones etc yet there is all the swagger of recent indie legends such as the Roses. It has attitude but more importantly its is delivered with undeniable skill. Every element, instrument, vocal is on point. Everything works perfectly, upon each listen you find something new. It may be a drum fill or a bass line, filled with glorious grooving riffs and soaring vocals that really shine. Without doubt this has to be their best track to date, although every one has been fantastic so far, it shows what these lads have to offer, they get better and better each time.
Its no secret Gazelle are a favourite of mine, I just love their attitude, their ethos and the tracks they produce, every track offers something new, I have it on good authority that there is so much more to come, and I for one cannot wait. One of the best UK bands around at the moment. A band that should not be ignored.
