Main Street - New Town

@TwoDaff

By Daffs aka @TwoDaff

Emerging from the rain-sodden streets of Glasgow, Scottish four-piece New Town bring a brand of upbeat indie pop to the fore. New Town are David James (Vocals, Guitar), Kieran smith (Writer, Guitar), Rob Haggerty (Bass), Euan Mcalonan (Drums). Their music is the complete antithesis to the city from where they take their name. They take their influences from a variety of artists such as Kings of Leon, U2, Sam Fender and John Mayer.

New Town released their debut single ‘Sail Away’ in July 2022 followed by ‘Spark’ in November. They went on to release an EP ‘Lost in the City’ in January this year. With a sold-out headline at the legendary King Tuts in Glasgow, 2023 see’s the band perform at a number of gigs across Scotland providing support for LNC, The Shambolics and Jack Fletcher Band.

They are set to release of their latest single ‘Main Street’ due out on the 14th. A song about dwelling on the past, chasing old memories and struggling to see what’s best for yourself.

A swirling blast of intense guitars

Instantly you are hit with a swirling blast of intense guitars and a chiming lead before a barrage of drums kick in and intensify as the song explodes into life. The guitars back off in intensity allowing the vocal to shine, crisp and smooth with a hint of yearning for yesteryear.

Strong and vibrant

Uplifting and bright the verse builds to a crescendo of an anthemic chorus, the vocal here really comes to the fore, its strong and vibrant. Backing vocals had a little more depth giving it added punch. Driven by the resonating thudding drum beat, and the drive of the bass, guitars shimmer in the background creating a colourful wall of sound, whilst the lead chimes and reverberates, intertwining with the rhythm, its captivating, full of melodies and has a feel-good vibe.

A colourful wall of sound

Lyrically it’s a sentimental journey, taking you on a journey to the past, good times and bad, looking back on all those memories and reflecting. Trying to find the answers that dwell there to make things better for yourself. This is reflected in the way the vocal is delivered, powerful yet there’s a hint of aching emotion.

A solo takes us towards the end of the track, it peals out like a bell, glistening with a vibrancy, swirling in and out of the mix as the drums power us through to the finale. New Town have created a great song here, it has a an anthemic feel, rousing and uplifting, I for one am looking forward to hearing this live. I have it on good authority that there are more songs coming soon, this year is sure to be a good one for these lads.
