Shrewsbury 17:25 - Smokin Eskimo
By Daffs aka @TwoDaff
Smokin Eskimo are a 3-piece originals bands from Bilston, West Midlands. Combining a blend of blues & rock styles, they cater for a wide range of listeners. Their lyrical content covers many aspects of modern life; from deep thoughts of the universe to taking a drive through the Countryside. These are complimented well by a solid backline and memorable, somewhat exciting riffs to get you on your feet.
The band are heavily influenced by 60's psychedelic rock and blues, 90's Britpop with a smattering of jazz and funk. This gives Smokin Eskimo a multi-genre sound that doesn't allow them to fall into one specific category.
Smokin Eskimo released their 4th single ‘English Meadows’ on 22nd July 2022 following on from ‘Magic Bill' released in December 2021. Other releases include ‘Nature’ and ‘Dynamite’. Since then, the band have been focussed on gigging around the Midlands and as far afield as Sheffield, Whitchurch and Aberystwyth. Chris, Jim and Jake are now concentrating on writing new songs to continue the streak They released their 5th single 'For The Moment' in September 2022 followed by 'Orange Chair' and the latest – 'Fuzzy Morning'.
Now the band are set to release their 8th single on March 20th 2023 – ‘Shrewsbury 17:25’ this will be accompanied with a YouTube video on the same day. Once again recorded at Foel Studios with Mike Bew, it has been a popular live tune for a number of years, Mike Bew managed to give it a live feel as the decision to record it or keep it as a live track was difficult. The band will back in the studio in May to record yet another single with an album also in the pipeline.
It’s a massive sound! Bold and Brashy.
This track see’s the band step away from their mellow side and slap us in the face with a blend of bluesy rock and classis indie Britpop tones. It’s heavier than previous tracks and I like that, it highlights the versatility of the band and showcases their ability to cross genres. You certainly can’t box them up and stick them in a pigeon hole…and for me that is the attraction nowadays. In addition, there is only three of them – it’s a massive sound! Bold and Brashy.
A fabulous pummelling drum beat
Fierce guitar hooks open the track with a fabulous pummelling drum beat that rumbles and thunders throughout, the whine and wail of a harmonica introduces you to a vocal that is strong, and powerful with the opening line “Well I’ve never seen you round here before”. This has a really cool Roses vibe, think Second Coming (which is underrated in my opinion) rather than the lemon album. But that’s where any likeness ends as Smokin Eskimo have their own sound.
There’s a touch of venom and snarl in the vocal
The whole vibe has an undeniable swagger, its clearly obvious why this is a live favourite, it has a groove that lifts you up and makes you want to move. There’s a touch of venom and snarl in the vocal that adds to the feel as the guitars drive the track, big riffs, bluesy and well, just dirty give the track an edge. For me this is their best track to date.
The guitars soar with scintillating solos
Towards the end the drums take over, full on energy and power, backed with a touch of psychedelic guitar play before we are hit with a massive instrumental finale that is just incredible, this is one of those songs that could go on for a good ten minutes, the guitars soar with scintillating solos and all the while the drums keep pounding out that infectious beat.
A massive instrumental finale
I have to say, this track has blown me away and is already a firm favourite of mine. You are gonna like these one folks I assure you.
