Having seen bands such as The Capollos and White Lines along with Lucille, the music scene here in the North east of Scotland is certainly strong and vibrant. So, I was really pleased when a new band on the scene, Hitlist caught my attention. Hailing from Aberdeen they formed just eight months ago and to say they have had a successful start is an understatement.

Having a sold-out headline show under their belts already, they have also supported Scottish favourites The Snuts and Yorkshire indie rockers Skylights at their Aberdeen gigs. They are now branching out further afield to Glasgow, Edinburgh and beyond.

Hitlist consist of four members, Callum Jones (Vocals, lyrics and Rhythm Guitar), Calum Chalmers (Lead Guitar), Scott Hardie (Bass) and Ollie Serle (Drums) and draw their influences from the likes of Sam Fender and The Snuts primarily.

A melodic rock edge

Now Hitlist are set to release their debut single ‘Soul Survivor’ on 23rd February 2023. Starting slowly and opening with a chorus of swirling jangling guitars giving an immediate atmospheric ambience. There’s an air of anticipation before the vocals kick in and the guitars develop a harder edge. The vocal is strong, delivered with confidence and packs an emotional punch.

Driven by the guitars there’s a melodic rock edge creating a template for the rest of the band to follow, as and pace builds drums grow in intensity adding more drive and urgency. It’s packed with melodic riffs; it possesses an energy and swagger that shows through in the instrumental with a gritty edge to the vocal that blends perfectly with the musical backdrop.

I have to say this is a strong and impressive debut release.

It’s no surprise after hearing this that they are selling out in their hometown and attracting attention further afield. Already sounding like an accomplished band its hard to believe they have only been going less than a year, a strong year ahead if this is anything to go by.
