The Life of Nelly - ALRIGHT
By Daffs aka @TwoDaff
Lancashire based ALRIGHT are set to release their latest single ‘The Life of Nelly’ on 26th February 2023. Having hit the music scene back in 2021 with their debut release ‘Lovers Game’ with ‘Rat Race’ as the B side. Since then, the lads have had a number of other releases such as ‘Tangerine Dream’ and the stomping ‘Everybody’d Onit’ leading to recognition by the Pet Shop Boys across BBC Sounds and social media platforms.
They have featured on Official Blackpool FC videos and have been played weekly at the club’s stadium. Influences include The Verve, The Beatles, Cast, The Coral, the band consists of Joe Darnell, (Vocals), Matt Bunnage (Rhythm Guitar), Joe Platt (Lead Guitar), Brad Mills (Bass) and Liam Smith (Drums).
They sold out their local venue Bootleg Social, the third fastest act to do so behind Slow Readers Club and The Wombats, these achievements have landed the band a number of opportunities recently including a sell-out This Feeling headline show in Manchester and a Christmas gig at the iconic Blackpool Tower. ALRIGHT have also topped bills in Liverpool and Barrow on top of supporting some exciting upcoming bands such as The K's. Most recently, the lads have been shortlisted to play next year's Glastonbury Festival (Pilton Stage).
An emotional celebration of a life lived…to the end!
Their latest single outlines the life (and death) of a band members late father (Nelly) and takes the listener on an emotional tour through the Life of Nelly. Opening with chiming, clean lead back with rhythmic acoustic strumming it acts as backdrop for the emotional tones of Joe’s vocal. It’s a step away from the sound listeners associate with the band. Its an emotional celebration of a life lived…to the end!
The drum beat is almost tribal
Lyrics are raw, relatable and strike a chord with the listener, the song really takes you on a journey, the trials and tribulations, the highs and lows, the good the bad. Yet its not sad, emotion driven yes but it its upbeat. The choruses build each time creating a deep resonating sound, the drum beat is almost tribal driving the story to a crescendo and a fantastic solo that really picks up pace before you are brought back down to earth with the final chapter. A spoken instruction that tells of what to do after the inevitable...
“I’m not afraid to die, when I do spend nothin' on the funeral, it doesn’t need to be fancy, I’ll be dead. Play these three tunes and I’ll be happy, and make sure you have a proper party…For me!"
This track is marvellous story told not only through the vocal but also through the sound the band creates, its poignant and heartfelt, it could be construed as sad but for me its celebratory and really highlights the bands versatility. The track builds as the story develops, its clever, you can feel the emotion within the track, the way it's put together is clever, there is a real chemistry within the band and this bodes well for the future. Alright have a sound that is accomplished and they really let their music do the talking.
