Time and Fate - The Underclass
By Daffs aka @TwoDaff
Hailing from Stoke, The Underclass formed in 2019 just prior to the pandemic hitting. The band consists of Jorge Wilson (Vocals), Matt Trevor (Guitar), Aaron Smith (Bass) and Adam Badenjiki (Drums). Having since sold out local venues such as The Sugarmill and the Underground and building up their fan base further afield performing at Liverpool’s Cavern Club, Jimmy’s in Manchester plus venues I Sheffield and Birmingham.
The band have a varied taste in music and influences ranging from The Foo Fighters, Guns n Roses to The Verve to Lily Allen and Don Broco. This melting pot of influences leads to quite a unique sound, giving the band individuality and a variety in the sounds they produce.
Early releases include ‘The One’ and ‘Bring it’ but it was 2022 that proved to be a catalyst for the band releasing 'Bad Dreams' and the anthemic 'Hometown' (both of which earned the band some serious plays on Spotify) along with playing two different sets at Y-Not Festival. The Underclass have quickly made a name for themselves both on and off stage thanks to their ability to seamlessly blend genres, both classic and contemporary, and their incendiary live performances, in their hometown and further afield.
Not a band to rest on their laurels however, The Underclass are back with their latest single ‘Time and Fate’. Released on 10th March. About the song, the band say
“Time and Fate is probably our most adventurous song to date. The song flows like a journey, starting pretty laid back before morphing into a huge anthem as it nears the end. The song has multiple meanings but the main one is a story between two people going through life wanting to achieve their goal with the belief of having time and fate at their side no matter what gets in the way”.
A subtle refinement
‘Time and Fate’ see’s the band step away from the blistering indie rock of their previous releases and highlights a subtle refinement and an adventurous variability in their capabilities. Something which has to be a good thing, variety is afterall, the spice of life. This does not detract in anyway the sound that they produce. Carefully crafted and honed into an anthemic refreshing song.
An ethereal vocal
Right from the start the track is filled with lush guitars, chiming melodic leads backed with gentle drums creating a template for an ethereal vocal that drips and intertwines with the instrumental. There is a heady mix of rhythm and acoustic guitars that shimmer and sway throughout whilst the lead takes centre stage, chiming runs and delayed notes glisten.
Chiming runs and delayed notes glisten
It’s measured and shows a softer side to the band, its not brash or in your face, it has an optimistic feel. The vocal really stands out, its light, airy yet is packed with sentiment and again highlights the confidence within the band, not being afraid to change things up and experiment with their music without taking away their indie/Britpop origins.
Packed with sentiment
Once again The Underclass have created another track that in my opinion showcases their talent (of which there are many…that’s obvious). Not afraid to take a risk and bring out something different The Underclass are a band that are bound to go places, this track underpins that. With a number of strong tracks under their belt already the world is their oyster.
