You Are My Movie - Lyon Tide

@TwoDaff

By Daffs aka @TwoDaff

Lyon Tide are an alternative electro pop/rock band from Birmingham consisting of Darren Barnard (Vocals and Guitars), Anthony La Pusata (Lyrics and Keyboards) and Girish Patel (Drums and Bass). Since the release of their debut single ‘Closure’ back in 2020 along with an album Beginnings of Ends in 2021, Lyon Tide have continued to hone their talent, creating atmospheric music, testing boundaries through the use of expansive synths, passionate lyrics on love, loss and life. Their creativity doesn’t stop there, through writing and video production they cover all bases.

Just to clarify, it’s pronounced Lyon like the French city and not Lion like the big furry cat as a lot of people are confusing it with. The origins of the band name is basically based on their random intrigue of the tidal effect caused by electromagnetic waves that lap the skies of Lyon (France) due to the excessive cellular antennas in and around that area — a phenomenon known as the Lyon Tide.

The trio have a variety of influences from many genres, harking back to the likes of Abba to Erasure to Bon Jovi, indie pop and even a bit of heavy metal thrown in. That said, their sound remains unique although influences can be heard in their tracks. According to band “We want to create music that does not sound like some other band as that just defeats the object and whitewashes our identity as a band”.

Their latest track ‘You are my movie’ is quite aptly due for release on February 14th. And is their first release since ‘Chemical Burn’ and the fantastic album ‘Life Pop Bang’. It is also the first single from the yet untitled forthcoming album due for release later this year. It is being released quite abruptly for Valentine’s Day, one of the band members found someone incredibly special and from this relationship lyrics were born. They were written during a flight back from Venice, Italy and within a matter of days it became a very heartfelt song. According to the band “The idea of releasing this track on Valentine’s Day 2023, a Tuesday, opposed to the conventional #NewMusicFriday was above all intended as a surprise for the girl it is written for but also to share the love and hope that other people will identify their own feelings and story with it.”

Eclectic with the sound they produce

If you are familiar with their sound then you will know that they are eclectic with the sound they produce, covering a broad spectrum ranging from synth heavy electro pop to 90's techno to more driven sounds and everything in between. 'You are my movie' is less synth more guitar pop rock with an emphasis on guitars and drums…but don’t worry the synths are still in there and the sound is still expansive! That’s the beauty of Lyon Tide, they are different, unique even, you cannot box them off or pigeon hole them to a certain sound or genre and for me that should be applauded.

A reflection of the vibe

Even the artwork for this song is relatable to their muse, and really shows off the artistic talents within the band, it’s a reflection of the vibe within the song enabling them to capture the essence of the girl in question, the band she loves colour, nature, can never sit still and so a butterfly is a true reflection add to this a venetian carnival mask that pays homage to a special time spent with her.

A melodic indie pop guitar melody

Opening with a deep resonating drum beat and a melodic indie pop guitar melody, it really is different, swirling synths shimmer behind the soft tonal vocal. It’s a perfect song for valentines. The beat of the drums really carries the song forward against a back drop of chiming guitars, its fresh and upbeat. You really get what this song is about.

Lyrically, its packed with emotion, “ You are my everything, you are my movie" add to this the fantastic vocal, perfectly delivered giving an air of yearning and yet more emotion. It’s a glorious love song.

Swirling synths shimmer behind the soft tonal vocal.

I get a slight hint of the lightning seeds but as I say these are just hints. It’s a warm, fuzzy track that encapsulates Valentines day, you could say a ‘Valentines anthem’ As with all their tracks they manage to fuse a plethora of genres and sounds into a song adding relatable lyrics about everything that is good or bad in life, creating a soundscape that is almost cinematic. This track is no different, it’s a heartfelt statement to the girl in question, if she hasn’t heard it yet, she will be blown over by it. It’s a perfect way to tell someone how you feel about them.

A ‘Valentines anthem’

Lyon Tide are a band that know what they want and definitely know to get it, their sound is unique, no two songs are the same drawing from a multitude of influences they have an uncanny knack of piecing different elements and genres together to create a sound that is pleasing and undeniably new. I have been following these guys for a while and can honestly say that they have a big future. They are multitalented in both their thinking and creativity, they are not frightened to experiment in any shape or form. Bravo!
