Our Fear is their Power - The Shed Project

@TwoDaff

By Daffs aka @TwoDaff

Originally a trio The Shed Project are Roy (Vocal) Tim (Bass) John (Rhythm) Olly (Lead) Shane (Drums). Formed by Roy and John in 2018 in John's garden shed (hence the band’s name). They released their first single ‘Livin’ in January 2020. Nine Singles later and after sold out gigs in Bolton and Manchester and featuring on the Brits and Pieces album, they released their debut album ‘The Curious Mind of a Common Man’ on April 29th 2022 to critical acclaim.

Well renowned for saying it as it is regarding many emotive subjects about life, whether it be love, loss, excess and indulgence and more importantly the state of society today. Reflecting on life’s experiences whether it be good or bad, they create a social commentary developed and honed into well crafted songs that strike a chord.

Having had massive success with their debut album and a number of follow up singles including the stomping ‘if you know you know’ and the almost balladlike and emotive charity release ‘If You're Getting Busy [You’re Getting Better]' released in February, (REVIEW HERE) they are set to return with a brand-new album later this year. Before we are treated to that (and believe me it is a treat…if you know…) they are set to release a new single ‘Our fear is their Power’ on 26th May, and is the title track from the forthcoming album.

This is a statement, a big statement

This is a statement, a big statement and as usual Roy and the lads don’t shy away from what needs to be said about the powers that be…media, politicians, police, government. They carry through the sentiments that were lived through from the 80’s through to today…not much difference in the grand scheme of things when the people or just playthings for those in Ivory towers to manipulate.

If you speak your mind and don’t fit the narrative you are overlooked

This track encapsulates the feelings of today but it doesn’t stop there, even within the music industry some are shunned, looked down on and for what…. saying it as it is and as usual if you speak your mind and don’t fit the narrative you are overlooked…not anymore!!

A strong confident vocal, that has a clear aim

The message within the track is there for all to see, but there is more to it. The music itself. Opening with a deep rolling tom tom, its almost tribal, before a swirling guitar creates an atmospheric, tense build up. Roy’s vocal kicks in, “Pain and destruction is all they believe, i'll find another planet so we can all leave…” a strong statement right from the get go. This is a strong confident vocal, that has a clear aim, to send a message to the masses…and he does. It has all the tones of a certain Mr Brown and this gives it gravitas, its not screamed or snarled but delivered in a way that makes you listen and take note.

Driving bass lines and explosive guitar riffs

As it breaks into the chorus, it picks up pace, snapping pistol shots from the drums, driving bass lines and explosive guitar riffs are overlaid with the lyrics “Our fear is their power...” Its an anthem for the people, rebellious to the core…and then the monotoned spoken lyric of a certain prime minister comes in to add just a hint of angst.

A barrage of drums create the feeling of turmoil

A crescendo of guitars and a barrage of drums create the feeling of turmoil, a clear representation of the state of the country, a country running on fear, division and confusion, it’s a true statement, a true reflection. Its about time a band stepped forward out of the shadows and said it how it is, and they do just that.

A song that needs to be heard

This track is set to get people talking, yes there are political overtones/undertones but take that out of the equation, listen to the song for what it is. It’s got the hallmarks of prime Brown with elements of Ryder attitude, guitars scintillate, swirling and cutting a swathe through the intense barrages and pistol shot drum beats. It’s a song that needs to be heard by the many not the few.
