The Universe Is Kind To Me - Smokin Eskimo

@TwoDaff

By Daffs aka @TwoDaff

Smokin Eskimo are a 3 - piece originals bands from Bilston, West Midlands. Combining a blend of blues & rock styles, they cater for a wide range of listeners. Their lyrical content covers many aspects of modern life; from deep thoughts of the universe to taking a drive through the Countryside. These are complimented well by a solid backline and memorable, somewhat exciting riffs to get you on your feet.

Heavily influenced by 60's psychedelic rock and blues, 90's Britpop with a smattering of jazz and funk, giving Smokin Eskimo a multi-genre sound that doesn't allow them to fall into one specific category.

After achieving success with 'Shrewsbury 17:25'. (REVIEW HERE) and ‘The Happy Wanderer’ (REVIEW HERE) and the mellow sounds of previous tracks ‘English Meadow' and 'For the Moment' all tracks highlighting the bands versatility, Smokin Eskimo return on the 2nd June 2023 with their 10th single ‘The Universe is Kind to Me’.

Recorded at Foel Studio with Mike Bew in October 2022, this track, according to the band is

3 minutes and 12 seconds of pure rock n roll energy - something completely different to what Smokin Eskimo have previously released. Heavily inspired by the late great Wilko Johnson

Accomplished song writing and creativity

I was first introduced to the band last year during an interview with the band Gazelle who recommended them to me and I have to say have been a fan ever since, their versatility and accomplished song writing and creativity is something that appeals. Having now done quite a few reviews previously its always exciting when a new song drops.

Akin to freight train rattling in your ear drums

Smokin Eskimo deliver on all fronts with this, its an explosion of sound right from the get go. Another side step from previous tracks. Its simple, pure, energetic rock n roll. Opening with a huge dirty riff backed with a drum beat that’s akin to freight train rattling in your ear drums. The bass line is huge, deep, rumbling and something that a certain Mr Thunderfingers would be proud of.

Packed full of bluesy fast paced riffs

It has punk edge with the percussive guitar chops that Wilko was known for. The guitar riffs are dirty, raw and in your face. Packed full of bluesy fast paced riffs and all the while the frenetic drum beats and thumping bass lines keep everything tight and on point.

Lyrics are delivered with a hint of venom

The vocal is powerful and in keeping with the track, it snarls, lyrics are delivered with a hint of venom. There is no messing about with this track, its loud, brash almost raucous yet there are a plethora of scintillating melodies created by the static infused guitars that blister and soar throughout the track. This is more of a statement than a song. The energy produced is electric, the pace is frenzied. It’s a track that picks you up by the scruff of the neck, throws you around the room and leaves you wanting more.

Static infused guitars that blister and soar

Smokin Eskimo get better and better with every track, their influences hark back to the 60’s and 70’s, taking snippets from a variety of legendary bands and artists, creating a modern sound. They are unique in the sound that is produced. They have developed an excellent repertoire of songs now, from more melodic, almost soulful tracks to much harder, pure rock. Each one highlights their versatility and skill; they have their own unique style and this should be applauded.

Versatility and skill

Chris, Jim and Jake are now concentrating on writing new songs to continue the streak after spending 2023 playing countless gigs & festivals including Manchester, Shrewsbury, Staffordshire and Sheffield. And later on in the year will be heading to Camden to play the legendary Dublin Castle for the first time. The band have also been very busy in the recording studio with plans for a debut album this year. I for one can’t wait for this, I really hope that they will release it on vinyl as their sound is perfect for this format. The universe may be kind but the world is their oyster. Another brilliant track.
